Featured Artists

Miwa Neishi

American-based Japanese artist Miwa Neishi’s work is the result of two perspectives coalescing together — the double meaning of words, the logical and the emotional, the contrast of colors, the abstract and literal. She draws from her experience of multi-cultural life, making art both primitive and modern, melting dual concepts into something harmonious and beautiful.

"My main sources of inspiration are abstract expressionism merged with prehistoric and ancient clay figurines and calligraphy," says Miwa. "While my art forms are sculptural and abstract, I wish the audience to find them as familiar as a flower vase – a form of earth carrying life and energy, freely given from nature."

Special Moji pots her signature piece – will be available in mini versions created to house incense sticks or single buds.

Cue Woodworks

Imada Tomoyuki is a wood craftsman living in Amami island, Japan. He makes unique sculptural objects by hand using local wood as his material. Taken from trees that have either fallen from a storm or left on the roadside to be discarded, they're given a second life by Imada-san as beautiful objects.

“I want you to understand and be attached to the individuality of the natural tree. I create objects using materials that return to the earth even after it has been used for a long time.”

Exclusively at DAMDAM [Atelier], Imada-san created incense and candle holders made especially to accompany DAMDAM products.

Kei Condo

Born in 1981 in Kasama, Ibaragi prefecture, Kei Condo started pottery in 2009. His perspective is that of a purist; taking decoration away, keeping the pottery as simple as possible. The result is stunning, as if natural driftwood was molded into a perfect ceramic orb.

He uses warm colors and clean shapes so that food served on the plate takes the major role. “I met a lot of chefs who led me to produce ceramics for food,” he says. The yellow color which is his trademark was inspired from what he saw in the mountains of Bolivia where he stayed for two years. The shape of his plates comes from a practical point where in foreign countries, all ingredients are served on a single plate.

Takemura Yoshinori

Takemura Yoshinori started pottery as a hobby in university. His practice is based on traditional Japanese techniques; a touch of irreverence added through his light-hearted use of color. He has always been fascinated with how different pigments react organically with each other, continually studying how to mix them in his work.

Our first collaboration with Yoshinori-san featured a color story based on the idea of duality, that contrary forces are often intertwined in the natural world. This December, more new works from the artist will be available at DAMDAM [Atelier].

Tomoya Sakai

Aichi-based ceramicist Tomoya Sakai graduated from Nagoya University of Arts (Ceramics Course) and Tajimi City Pottery Design And Technical Center. His play on color and architectural shapes make his pieces unique: Though the art of ceramics is associated with natural objects, Sakai-san’s perspective imbues his objects with the optimism and vibrancy of modern animation, reminiscent of the '80s design movement Memphis Milano.

A special selection of Sakai-san’s work curated by DAMDAM will be available at DAMDAM [Atelier] exhibition market.

Yukari Obuchi

Graduating from Musashino Art University, Department of Crafts and Industrial Design, Department of Ceramics, Yukari Obuchi is a ceramist who creates delicate, easy-going forms in softly glazed color. Based in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, she is fascinated by things that change such as time, season, and temperature, which flow unconsciously and making daily life more beautiful. The vividness of glaze colors are characteristic of Obuchi-san's work, capturing moments of changing days and "memories of nature and sensation."

Craig Anczelowitz/ Awagami FactoryNative New Yorker, Craig Anczelowitz received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Penn State University in 1991.  Balancing his Fine Art and Design careers since then, Craig has honed his creativity via collaborations with Italian glassblowers, Indian weavers, Thai potters and Japanese papermakers.

In 1914, Yoichiro Onishi became a candlemaker apprentice upon his parents' suggestion. After coming back to his hometown in Shiga prefecture's Takashima City, he started Daiyo, his own candle-making practice. Since then, the 104-year-old business has been kept in the family and is presently at the hands of its fourth-generation maker, Satoshi Onishi.

"We do not only light a candle but also use fire itself. The role of a candle is to connect people with fire; in other words, to build a relationship between nature and people. When a candle is lit, people gaze at various things in the fire. The synchrony of the fluttering flame can gently touch the heart of a person sitting closely to a fire. The flame energizes our huge capacity for acceptance, its flickering as soothing as the stroking we received when we were young. This is a feeling that comes from harmony between nature and people. The present age is an unstable time. The number of people who light candles in their lives is increasing, and it seems that we are seeking not only healing but also warmth of life."

For winter and the festive season, special collaboration candles will be available at DAMDAM [Atelier].

Gyokusyodou

At Gyokusyodou, artisans have been crafting incense since 1804. Sticks are made from dried and powdered bark of the Lauraceae tree, Machilus thunbergii. Fragrant Chinese herbal medicines and essences are added to the mix, forming a thick paste of incense base which is then pressed into fine lines of raw incense.

At home, we use incense as part of our daily routine. Olfactory pleasures are deeply connected to the brain especially in forming memories, so the scent of burning incense lightly wafting through the air lets us get into the right headspace of calm and stillness.

Special collaboration incense exclusively blended and made for DAMDAM will be available at DAMDAM [Atelier].

DAMDAM [Atelier]

Tsuchikaze

Yuka Yamasaki is an Okayama-born floral artisan who crafts natural bouquets using dried flowers and handmade kits. “I want you to feel the graceful beauty and presence of dried flowers,” she says.

For the festive season, a selection of her work will be available at DAMDAM [Atelier] exhibition market.
