Is willow bark the same as salicylic acid?

No, and this is the important distinction. Salicin from willow bark does not convert to salicylic acid on the skin; that conversion is an oral-only pathway that requires gut bacteria. Willow bark is therefore not a "natural salicylic acid" and does not act as a BHA-type exfoliant at the skin surface. It is better understood as a gentle anti-inflammatory and antioxidant botanical.
